Online Videos Provide H1N1 Guidance to Parents and Schools
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), has produced two videos to inform parents, teachers, school administrators, school nurses and other educators of steps they can take to prevent the transmission of H1N1 influenza (also known as “swine flu”) and seasonal influenza.

Richmond Public Schools Seeks Input On Facilities Master Plan
In 2007 the Richmond City Public Schools Board approved a comprehensive, multi-phased facilities program that included a detailed schedule of school redevelopment pending available funding. This was submitted to and approved by Richmond City Council.

City Schools Will Kickoff ‘Go Green’ recycling project Monday at J.B. Cary
Richmond Public Schools launches the district’s “Go Green” recycling program at 48 schools throughout the city. Last year, schools collected 233,350 pounds of recycled paper, which equates to saving 662 trees.

Four Richmond City Teachers Receive R.E.B. Awards for Teaching Excellence
Four Richmond City teachers have been awarded more than $36,000 in cash grants as recipients of this year’s R.E.B. Awards for Teaching Excellence. The program, a partnership between The Community Foundation and the R.E.B. Foundation, recognizes outstanding public school teachers from Chesterfield, Hanover, Henrico, Richmond and the Department of Correctional Education. Richmond’s SOL scores rise; more than 90 percent of city schools
earn full accreditation

For the fourth straight year, every Richmond City high school is fully accredited, according to the latest results on the state’s Standards of Learning (SOL) tests. In fact, the number of schools earning full accreditation has climbed above 90 percent as 44 of the district’s 47 schools (93.6 percent) met the SOL benchmark scores in English, mathematics, history and science.

City schools maintain AYP performance levels; Nearly 80 percent of schools meet increased standards in math and reading
Nearly 80 percent of Richmond City Public Schools meet the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) requirements of the federal government’s No Child Left Behind Act, according to preliminary figures released today. Based on data compiled by school officials, 79 percent (37 of 47) of the city’s schools meet the federal benchmark scores in math and reading.

Richmond’s Open High named Blue Ribbon School by U.S. Dept. of Education
Richmond’s Open High has been named a 2008 No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. The designation is one of the highest honors a school can receive from the federal government. Read more.
